Murilo and I just finished watching 2012 here in Rome and we couldn't have picked a more perfect place to watch it! Jessica watched it in Portland and told me it was OK - the special effects were great but the story was so-so.
For those who don't know the storyline - the end of the world is coming. There's a part in the movie where all the heads of state are evacuating for a preplanned, secret, escape destination. However, the U.S. President (played very well by Danny Glover) decides he must stay with his people. Only one other world leader also decides to stay back - Il Presidente of Italy!! He is shown praying outside the Vatican in St. Peter's Square (with many other Roman citizens). The whole theater erupted in laughter!! There were a couple of American guys with some Italian girls sitting nearby who didn't understand why everyone was laughing. The young ladies explained "he wouldn't be praying, if you know what we mean..."
It was priceless!! We heard laughter everytime the Italian President was mentioned after that!
Oh - and this was the first time we've ever had 'assigned' seats for a movie! At first we weren't sure if anyone was really following their seat assignments (Murilo, ever vigilant, noticed it on the tickets). Then, a fight nearly broke out in front of us over seats that some jerk tried to 'steal'. Of course, the movie was starting (opening credits rolling) and these two guys were cussing at each other. Well, actually, the one guy started grumbling and cussing because he got busted in front of his girlfriend while the other guy had 8 other family members (standing in front of us waiting for their seats). It was ridulous - other people around us started telling the guy to move and then he cussed at everyone! He did finally move.
And, for Lorene - I am reading parts of "Bonk" to Murilo and today we came upon a street flea market. You will never believe what I found!! At a video stand I found a movie called "Kinsey!!" It stars Liam Nielson (sp ?) and Laura Linney (again sp ?) - we had just read about him last night so it was "destiny". I'll let you know if it is any good!! The book is hilarious - I so recommend any books by Mary Roach (Stiff, Spook, and Bonk). Our favorite line so far "And while his wife was at home suckling Peter, he was out , well, suckling peter."

Oh Berlusconi! It is honestly amazing to me that he is continually re-elected. Granted, Italian politics are admittedly more shady than American politics (who knew that was even possible?!). I was in Rome during the whole model/senator/divorce scandal unfolded and man was it pandemonium. As for the movie theater, I TOTALLY know which one you went to (not that there are many that play English movies). That was a new experience for me, as well. Sounds like you had a fun trip!
