This morning, Murilo and I were invited to the Szebestas for a Czechish Knodel lesson! When they arrived in Germany, Erich was disappointed with the German breads available in the bakeries - alas, no knodel. Well, there was knodel - just not Czech knodel! After many failed attempts at making their own, they finally asked Vlasta's father to send them the recipe (no easy task at that time since Czechoslavakia was Russian controlled).

Erich and Vlasta still have the original recipe sent to them in 1969!! Today, they shared their recipe with us - and we butchered it! Well, I butchered it, Murilo's turned out OK. The Szebestas were very supportive - they said it would take a few times to get it right. We'll see... Erich's knodel never looks lumpy like ours looked He confided as we were leaving that he smooths his out more and rubs butter on it before cooking. See, he was holding out on us!
