Jennifer arranged for us to train to Meknes and meet a colleague from there. The woman and her husband drove us out to Volubilis and then took us to a restaurant owned by their family. We ate a wonderful Chinese meal and drank some local wine! Afterwards, they would not allow us to pay - what an unexpected surprise. Jennifer says this is very Moroccan - they offer their best to guests.
Volubilis was a major olive oil producing location for the ancient Romans. And, the area is still well known for the oil coming from the entire region. Volubilis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is very beautiful - especially the mosaic tile floors (of which I have great photos but my photos don't do them justice).

A view of the nearest city, Moulay Idriss, from Volubilis. This city was founded by, you guessed it, Moulay Idriss, who also built Fez. To build his namesake city, builders plundered the already deserted Volubilis ( a common story).

Jennifer's colleague (who teaches French) traveled back to Fez with us. We had a great day trip and enjoyed seeing the smaller towns and countryside from the train.
